March 29 session 3 board 11

Post by Patrick Phair » Tue Apr 01, 2014 2:26 pm

This was hand 11 of session 3, where I lost a 17=point swing which cost me two matchpoints.

Code: Select all

Vorhand Mittelhand Hinterhand Skat
J: C D J: J: H J: S
C: 10 C: K 9 C: A Q 8 7 C:
S: K 8 7 S: A 10 9 S: Q S:
H: A 10 8 H: 9 H: Q 7 H: K
D: 9 D: K Q 8 7 D: A 10 D:
I was declarer as Vorhand and decided against playing Grand with three probable spade losers. The lucky split gave me Schwarz in my spade contract for 55. Beth played Grand for 72.

I should have thought about the Grand for longer, since given the C10 in the discard it is hard to find a distribution on which it fails, provided I lead a small spade before playing too many winners. It needs one defender to hold CA and DA10, with either no spades or the singleton S9 and no HJ.

Better still, discard the SK instead of D9 and it's a guaranteed winner: 7 certain tricks, defence can cash 0pts from you, and just 3 Aces, 2 10s and a K for 56pts.
