Hands from the Kite, 9 February

Postby Patrick Phair » Mon Feb 11, 2013 10:37 pm

Here are six interesting hands from last Sunday's tournament at the Kite. Comments are invited.

Session 1, board 26

Vorhand:
J H
C 8
S 10 K 8 7
H A 9
D Q 9
Mittelhand:
J S D
C K Q
S Q 9
H Q
D 10 K 7
Hinterhand:
J C
C A 10 9 7
S A
H K 8 7
D 8
Skat: H10, DA

18 Hs +30 Hinterhand
23 C +24 Hinterhand
18 No +46 Hinterhand
0 passed out

Hinterhand has lots of options, but only Maria spotted the Null Ouvert on what looks like a positive hand.

Session 2, board 6

Vorhand:
J
C
S 9 7
H A 10 8 7
D A K 9 7
Mittelhand:
J S D
C K 8
S K Q
H K Q 9
D 10
Hinterhand:
J H
C A 10 Q 9 7
S A 8
H
D Q 8
Skat: CJ, S10

36 No +46 Vorhand
36 No +46 Vorhand
36 No +46 Vorhand
24 Cs +36 Hinterhand

Beth as Vorhand sold out much earlier than anyone else. The diamond suit is interesting in Null Ouvert. Declarer had discarded CJ and DA. As the defender with Q8 I thought it could be defeated, as indeed it could if my partner held DA. This raises the question of whether AK97 is actually a better holding than K97.

Session 2, board 11

Vorhand:
J
C
S 9
H 10 K Q 9 7
D 10 9 8 7
Mittelhand:
J H D
C K 9
S 10 K 8 7
H 8
D K
Hinterhand:
J S
C A 10 Q 8 7
S A Q
H A
D A
Skat: CJ, DQ

36 No +46 Vorhand
36 Gss +120 Hinterhand
48 Noh +59 Vorhand
24 Gss +120 Hinterhand

There was much variation in players' estimates of both Vorhand and Hinterhand. Nobody knew, of course, how huge the skat was!

Session 3, board 10

Vorhand:
J S
C 7
S A Q 9 7
H
D A 10 K 9
Mittelhand:
J C
C A 10
S 10
H A 10 9 8 7
D 8
Hinterhand:
J H
C K Q 9 8
S K 8
H K
D Q 7
Skat: DJ, HQ

30 Shs +44 Vorhand
18 Gss +96 Mittelhand
24 Gss +96 Mittelhand
20 Ss +33 Vorhand

Another huge skat, and this is among the hands which probably cost me the tournament. Is there any way I can bid beyond 30 as Mittelhand? And how good is the Grand if the jacks don't split? (Nick, as Mittelhand on table 2, could play in hearts. Will at table 3 was pushed into Grand once he had exchanged.)

Session 4, board 15

Vorhand:
J
C A 7
S A 10 K
H A Q 7
D A 8
Mittelhand:
J C
C K Q 9
S Q
H 10 8
D K Q 7
Hinterhand:
J S H D
C 10 8
S 8 7
H 9
D 10 9
Skat: S9, HK

20 S –44 Hinterhand
18 G +120 Vorhand
18 G +120 Vorhand

An unhelpful skat this time, but the breaks were kind and the Grand came in. As the only Vorhand to hear a bid above 18 (and possibly the only one to hear any bidding at all) was I being unduly cautious?

Session 4, board 18

Vorhand:
J C H
C K
S A K Q 7
H 10
D 10 Q
Mittelhand:
J
C Q 7
S 10
H A K Q 9 8
D A 9
Hinterhand:
J S D
C 10 9 8
S 9 8
H 7
D K 7
Skat: CA, D8

20 S +22 Vorhand
18 S +22 Vorhand
23 H +50 Mittelhand

How many people agree with bidding as Mittelhand?

1/26
Certainly shouldn't have been passed out. I'd bid 23 and consider 24.

I would have played an ordinary null though: with a 4 and a 5 card suit, a 3-1 or 3-0 split and it could easily go off. The 23pt gain against a potential loss of 215 isn't worth it.

2/6
I would say AK97 is definitely better than K97, there's more chance of the suit being safe.

2/11
The bidding was probably wrong at all four tables. My NHO was risky, only a 56.7% of success. Noel and I were surprised that John on table 1 had been allowed the game at 46 and that Mark, of all people, hadn't bid 48 in Hinterhand. Perhaps even more surprising is that the other two forehands didn't go to null ouvert with just a singleton 9 to get rid of.

3/10
As it stands, MH makes Grand if the Clubs and Hearts split (neither does), so maybe it's worth bidding for with the Skat to come. I think I'd have agonised for a long time over whether to bid more than 30.

After the pick-up, it still has a fair chance if the Jacks don't split: discard S10 and HA (21), you can expect to trump an Ace (34) win CJ (38) then play H10, and if it carries(52), a winning SA is enough; if it's trumped(38), you may well get a club led back later to win your A,10, which need to capture a Q. Alternatively, after the CJ, play CA,10 and go for a club split (62)

4/15
Yes I think you were too cautious. I admit I never know how high to bid this sort of hand, but I think certainly 24, probably 48, it already stands a good chance of Grand.

As HH, I too would have come a cropper on your table, bidding over 18, and the worst case scenario turning up with a 6 2 2 2 split. Discard two 10s and pray?

4/18
I wouldn't have bid over 18 as MH
