Skat in the Kite

We used to hold regular Duplikat Skat tournaments in The Kite, Mill Street, Oxford. Soon after our tournament last January, the landlord, Paul, retired, and new Australian management arrived. I checked it in March and again in the summer, and found it very busy at weekends, with standing room only by 18:00, making it unsuitable for an all-day Skat event.

But further visits a month ago, and again this evening, have found it quite quiet at weekends. This (Saturday) evening, we could have occupied the whole side room (formerly the pool room, now with six customer tables) all day until 20:00 without inconveniencing anyone. I have talked to the management, and they would be happy to host further Skat events. The only snag is that they do not open until 12:00.

I therefore plan to hold the next Oxford Duplikat Skat tournament in The Kite, sometime in the next two months, with our usual format but starting at 12:00, registration closing at 12:20.

I shall be using the mailing list about this, encouraging those interested to respond here with their preferred dates.

Hi Nick, I would like to put my interest in attending the next skat meeting in Oxford. Would prefer a Saturday if possible. Thanks. Mark.

I can make March 7, 8 and 28 but not the other three.

The 28th is only six days after a London tournament.

I can do Feb 28, Mar 28, possibly Mar 29. The other Sundays are ruled out with rail engineering works, unless I can stay at my friend's in Reading

I have fixed the date: Saturday March 28th. I shall add it to the list at

And I must issue an apology about my earlier statement that their beer,
though still real, is now chilled. The Australian landlady had put a sign
on the bar saying "chilled", but this was just misguided advertising, it
was and still is served at cellar temperature. They also serve Fosters,
which really is chilled.
