Re: Session 2 hand 5 -- Grand against 4
I am surprised at the suggestion of discarding SA and S10. While the bidding to 55 increases the chance of a spade void it doesn't promise one, while the unfortunate presence of a club in the skat means that I know the second round won't stand up. Hearts against seven costs 160 if it fails, while cl...

Session 4 hand 13 -- big hand as Vorhand
This is hand 13 of session 4 last Sunday. 4/13 Vorhand Mittelhand Hinterhand Skat J CSH - - D C - TQ987 AK S AT8 KQ7 9 H 8 K ATQ97 D ATK 8 Q7 9 Vorhand looks like a Grand Hand with good hopes of schneider, but not good enough to announce it. Both players (Martin and Alban) did that. But I was surpri...

Session 2 hand 5 -- Grand against 4
This is hand 5 of session 2 last Sunday. 2/5 Vorhand Mittelhand Hinterhand Skat J - D CSH C AT7 K98 - Q S ATK - Q987 H Q7 ATK8 9 D AT K8 Q9 7 I was Vorhand. This looks like a Grand against 4, so after Mittelhand passed I said "yes" to the bids coming from John as Hinterhand. So far so good, but how ...

Re: Is it bad to have seven trumps?
OK, that looks reasonable. Suppose the discards are D9 and C9, making the Grand less attractive.

Re: Is it bad to have seven trumps?
OK -- that's probably right.
How about if the heart suit were solid?

September 2. hand 1/4
While I was writing up the hands I noticed hand 4 of session 1, on which I was the non-playing dealer. Vorhand Mittel Hinter Skat J HD - CS C - 97 TKQ8 A S 8 TQ9 K7 A H TQ97 A8 K D T87 AQ9 K At both tables Hinterhand made +48 in clubs schneider, the bidding having stopped at 24 at one table and 18 a...

Re: Is it bad to have seven trumps?
I don't remember my thinking on Nick's hand, though I do remember that almost all my six-trump holdings on Saturday met 4-1 breaks.
An interesting further point about this hand: if you are playing in spades and a diamond is led, presumably you ruff. But with what?

Re: A Grand that wasn't? (19 March, 3/11)
After over a year with no postings about recent hands it took me a while to notice the threads about the March tournament. Thanks to Gustavo for getting this board going again. I am surprised to see that both Alban and Mike bid on my hand: J: - C: A 8 S: A 10 7 H: 9 D: A 10 Q 7 I remember thinking i...

Session 4 -- missed chance
I have now sent out the hand records for last Sunday. Beth and I missed an opportunity on hand 14 of session 4. As Vorhand we held J: CS C: AT9 S: T H: ATK D: 9 Possibly because of the singleton ten we both exchanged, and we both made Grand with schneider for no swing. It was only while writing the ...

Re: Hands from last Sunday
The hand is invincible because the valuable cards in clubs and diamonds are in the same hand, so they cannot all be saved for the few tricks declarer loses at the end. Having these cards in the hand under declarer makes it even harder for the defence to pick up points.
