Computer Go Tournaments on KGS

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there two divisions? The divisions were introduced because some strong programs were unwilling to play in an event which might contain multiple copies of GNU Go. So, there is a "Formal" division, in which only one copy of GNU Go may play; and an "Open" division, which is pretty much unrestricted. See the Criteria for entering the Formal division.
Can I enter a bot for each division? Yes, if it meets the criteria for entering the Formal division.
  How do I do that? You create two accounts on KGS for it. You tell me which account name is to play in which division. You run two copies of your bot.
  Must they be the same? They may be the same, or different, or the same progam differently configured.
  But how do I run them both? On different computers, if possible. However, if you only have the use of one computer, you can run them both on it, at once. If it is running Windows, you just launch kgsGtp.jar twice, giving it the parameters for your two bots. If Mac, or Linux, I assume it is similar. Of course this will cause the two bots to share one processor, with a time hit; but if your opponents use time too, and your bot does not ponder, the hit may only be 25%.
Can I enter a straight GNU Go clone? No. It is pointless and annoying having multiple copies of the same program (GNU Go or any other) playing in the same division. If you can convince me that you have made significant changes to GNU Go, I may let you enter it for the Open division. However only one GNU Go, may play in the Formal division: if more than one wishes to play, the decision is with the GNU Go development team.
How do I set my bot up for tournament play? You read the instructions. In particular, you include the line
mode=tournament
in your configuration file.
Can I enter two or more bots for the same division? Yes, if they all meet the criteria required for all bots. In particular, in the Formal division, they must have no move-generating code in common with each other or with any other bot that has entered.

Aloril routinely enters several bots for the Open division. However, he allows me to remove them at my discretion, and tells me which ones to remove first.
